Through this category of analysis it is possible to identify, describe and analyze the organization and integration of the regional urban system, spatially and functionally. This system is made up of the set of urban centers (heads of departmental, municipal and non-municipal areas), related to each other in a hierarchical manner, where each one has specific attributes such as population size, extension, form, services, equipment and functions. It is determined by the geographical distribution, size, functions, relationships and spatial interactions of urban centers.
Processes of Analysis of the Functional Space Dimension
Four major themes are presented that allow reading and analysis of the regional urban system. These are:
Urban processes are determined by the hierarchy, morphology, dynamics and analysis of the functions of the urban system.
Spatial processes are developed through the analysis of administrative and socio-economic relationships and flows according to the conditions of regional and subregional accessibility. The sub-regionalization processes allow for the analysis and compatibilization of existing proposals for the region formulated at the national level and/or by civil society together with the results of the administrative and economic subregions complemented with the urban hierarchy. The functional subregions of the system constitute the spatial synthesis of the regional territory, reflecting the conditions of the components analyzed.
